Smyrna packs a lot of different houses into a small city: pre-war cottages, 1950s ranches, 1980s two-stories, and new townhomes a few blocks apart. Text us a photo of yours and the address. Smyrna is the Jonquil City, named for the flowers that come up all over town in early spring. In December it is known for something else: the lights at Market Village and the Village Green. The city lights up downtown around Thanksgiving and holds its tree lighting there a few days later, with Santa arriving to flip the switch and the Kris Kringle market selling gifts around the green.
That downtown is newer than it looks. By the mid-1980s Smyrna felt like it was losing itself to sprawl, so in 1988 the city decided to rebuild the center of town. The fountain and traffic circle at the Village Green went in during the 1990s, the project won an Urban Land Institute award in 1997, and Market Village opened in 2002 as a mixed-use block. It is now the heart of town, and several of the older neighborhoods sit close enough to walk there, which is not something many places in Cobb County can say.
The houses around downtown span about a century. Williams Park is Smyrna's first residential neighborhood, and a 2012 survey found about twenty houses there built before the First World War, the biggest group of old buildings left in the city. Cheney Woods has 200-plus homes from the 1950s and 60s within walking distance of Market Village. Belmont Hills has midsize homes. Forest Hills is an established neighborhood of mostly 1970s to 1990s houses, known for a busy social calendar. And in between, new townhomes and infill homes keep going up.
Every one of those takes a slightly different plan, which is why we quote from a photo. A 1950s ranch is a long, low line. A townhome is a short front with a tall facade. Williams Park has the city's largest group of homes built before World War I, mixed with later houses on the same streets. The older ones have front porches, steps up from the walk, and original wood trim. A line along the porch roof, lit steps, and wrapped porch posts fit the scale of these houses without hiding what makes them special. We keep every fastener off the old wood and use tension wraps on posts and rails.
Cheney Woods and other post-war neighborhoods near Market Village are full of 1950s and 60s ranches with long, low rooflines. These are some of the easiest houses to light well. One clean line across the front, a lit walkway, and a couple of shrubs look finished. The houses sit close enough to downtown that the lights get seen by people walking to the tree lighting.
Forest Hills is mostly established houses from the 1970s through the 1990s, mostly medium to large single-family homes, many with mature trees in the yard. The neighborhood is known for its social calendar, and plenty of homeowners like to have the house lit as soon as the season turns. We light the roofline and front gables and wrap a tree or two in the front yard. Tree and shrub wrapping is quoted one tree at a time.
Townhomes and older houses in Smyrna are often short on storage. In January we come back, take everything down, pull every clip, and coil and label each strand. Then we store them until next fall, so your closet stays a closet.
Market Village and the blocks around the Village Green are full of restaurants and small shops, and December is when the most people walk through. The city already lights the green, so a business that is dark stands out for the wrong reason. A lit roofline or window outline, a wrapped tree by the door, or garland along a rail makes a storefront look like part of the show.
