Christmas light takedown and storage

Putting lights up is fun. Taking them down in January, in the cold, after the holidays are over, is not. We come back after the season, unclip the roofline, unwrap the trees, pull the shrub nets, coil and label every strand, and store it all until next year if you want. Your garage stays a garage.

The part of Christmas lights nobody talks about

Everyone thinks about the first night the lights come on. Almost nobody thinks about the second weekend in January, standing on a cold ladder, pulling frozen clips off a gutter and trying to wrap a strand around an elbow without knotting it. Then there is the plastic tub. Then there is finding room for the plastic tub.

Takedown is part of every install we do. If we hung your lights, the January visit is already on the plan. We unclip every run from the gutters and gables, unwrap trunks and columns, lift the nets off shrubs, and pull the timer. Nothing we put up was nailed or stapled, so there is nothing to pry out and no holes left behind.

Then we coil each strand and label it by section, like "front gutter left" or "maple by the drive." That label is the reason next season's install goes faster. Then we keep the labeled lights in storage until next season, so the house goes back to normal and nothing ends up in your attic.

If you are new to having lights professionally hung, start with the whole-house package, where takedown and storage are part of the plan. Most of our January takedowns are in the North Atlanta suburbs, from subdivisions in Johns Creek and Alpharetta to older streets in Sandy Springs. Homes in DeKalb County and Peachtree City get the same routine.

  • Everything comes down

Roofline, trees, shrubs, columns, and the timer. We walk the property before we leave to make sure nothing got missed.

  • Coiled and labeled

Every strand is coiled so it will not tangle and labeled by where it goes on your house.

  • Storage until next season

We keep your labeled lights until next year, so you do not give up a shelf in the garage.

  • No holes left behind

Clips and tension wraps come off clean. Your gutters, shingles, and trees look like they did in October.

Here is what happens in January

Here is what happens in January

  1. We text you that your house is on the route.
  2. The crew unplugs the timer and works around the house one section at a time.
  3. Roofline strands come off the gutter clips and shingle clips.
  4. Tree and column wraps come off, then the shrub nets.
  5. Each strand is coiled and labeled by section.
  6. We walk the yard and roof edge to check nothing got left behind.

Then we text you that we are done. Most takedowns are quicker than installs because nothing has to be measured.

Why labels matter

Why labels matter

Every strand we hang was cut to fit a specific run on your house. A strand cut for the front gutter will not fit the side gable. If everything gets thrown into one box, next year starts with a puzzle.

So we label each coil by where it goes. Next season the crew pulls "front gutter left," clips it up, and moves to the next one. That is how an install that took a full visit the first year can go faster the second year.

The DIY takedown problem

The DIY takedown problem

If you have ever done it yourself, you know the list. Clips that snap when you pull them in the cold. Icicle strands that tangle the moment they leave the gutter. A ladder on wet grass. A tub that does not close. Lights that come out of that tub next year as one big knot.

We are not saying you cannot do it. We are saying it is the least fun part of Christmas, and it is the part we are happy to take off your list. Our roofline page covers how the lights go up in the first place.

Businesses and neighborhood entrances

Businesses and neighborhood entrances

Takedown is not just for houses. Shops, offices, and restaurants want their windows back in January, and HOA boards want the entrance back to normal without calling around for volunteers.

Our small business and HOA entrance jobs include the same January takedown, coiling, labeling, and storage.

A quick January checklist for you

A quick January checklist for you

Your part of takedown is small, but it helps:

  • Leave side gates open on your takedown day, or tell us the code.
  • Move cars out of the driveway if the ladder needs that spot.
  • Keep pets inside while the crew works the yard.
  • Tell us about anything new, like a fence or a fresh flower bed, that we should step around.
  • Let us know now if you want changes next year, so we can note it on the labels.

That is it. The rest of the January work is ours. If you liked this year's look and want the same thing next season, say so and it goes on your file. If you are in Cobb County or anywhere else we hang lights, the checklist is the same.

Takedown and storage questions

What people want to know about the January visit.

When do you take the lights down?

In January, after the holidays. We schedule takedowns by route, the same way we schedule installs, and let you know when your house is coming up. If you want lights down on a certain week, tell us early and we will do our best to fit it.

Do I need to be home for takedown?

Usually not. We need access to the outlets and any side gates. Most people just get a text when we are done. It is a nice surprise to come home and find the house back to normal.

What does storage mean, exactly?

We keep the lights we hung on your house, coiled and labeled by section, until next season. When install time comes back around, they come back with us. You do not keep anything at home, and storage is part of the quote. If you need a different arrangement, we agree on it up front and write it on your quote.

Can you take down lights you did not put up?

Our takedown is built around lights we hung, because those are cut, clipped, and labeled for your house. If you have your own lights up now, send a photo of what is up and how it is attached and ask. If anything was stapled or nailed in, we will tell you that before anyone gets on a ladder.

Does takedown cost extra?

No. On lights we install, takedown and storage are part of the quote from the start, so there is no surprise bill in January.
